Thousands of migrants waiting for Australian Citizenship have received an important update from the Department of Home Affairs.

New official figures show that 90 per cent of general Australian Citizenship applications are being finalised within seven months.

For applicants who receive approval, 90 per cent are expected to attend a Citizenship Ceremony within six months from the approval date.

However, processing times can vary depending on document checks, background assessments, application complexity, and demand for ceremonies in local council areas.

Home Affairs data shows that as of May 31, 2026, more than 62,000 general Citizenship applications were still waiting to be processed.

The figure also includes children aged 15 or under who are included in their parents’ applications.

Meanwhile, more than 4,400 Citizenship by Descent applications and over 800 Citizenship Evidence applications were also pending.

The latest figures highlight the continued strong demand for Australian Citizenship, with more than 19,000 new applications submitted in a single month.
