Immigration Chief taken to court

Immigration and Emigration Controller Harsha Illukpitiya, charged with contempt of court, was produced before the Supreme Court yesterday morning (22nd) by prison officials.

He was remanded in custody last September for failing to implement interim injunctions issued by the Supreme Court.

These injunctions were related to Fundamental Rights petitions filed regarding the issuance of e-visas.

The Supreme Court had previously directed the Immigration Controller to comply with its orders, which were allegedly disregarded.

The petitions concerning the e-visa issue are scheduled for hearing before the Supreme Court today.

Illukpitiya’s court appearance is in connection with these ongoing legal proceedings.
