Immigration busts boarding pass scam sending Lankans to UK for asylum

In a rare interception, Sri Lanka’s Department of Immigration and Emigration (DIE) uncovered a major boarding pass swap scam aimed at smuggling Sri Lankan men to the UK to claim asylum.

A 29-year-old Mullaitivu resident, preparing to board a flight to Mumbai, was arrested at the airport after officials found two fake French and two fake Spanish passports hidden in a puzzle box in his luggage.

Investigations revealed a coordinated plan involving identity swaps during transit in Mumbai, allowing the suspects to board separate flights to London and Singapore using fake documents.

The suspect admitted to paying Rs. 9 million to an agent for the fake passports and is now in custody, with the case handed over to the CID for further investigation.
