A staff team from the International Monetary Fund is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka from March 26 to April 9, according to IMF Communications Director Julie Kozack.
Speaking at an IMF press briefing, Kozack said the visit will focus on discussions related to economic policies. The mission aims to complete the combined fifth and sixth reviews of the IMF-supported programme, while also assessing the potential impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict on Sri Lanka’s economy.
She noted that the IMF team will engage closely with Sri Lankan authorities to better understand how the conflict could affect the country’s economic outlook. Once the visit concludes, the team is expected to provide an updated assessment of the economy and determine how the IMF can continue to support Sri Lanka.
Kozack further stated that the IMF is actively engaging with countries affected by the Middle East conflict, evaluating global economic risks and offering support through policy advice, capacity development, and financial assistance where necessary.
She added that the IMF has already held discussions with finance ministers, central bank governors, and regional institutions across multiple countries to share perspectives on the implications of the conflict and explore ways to provide effective support.
The overall economic impact, she said, will largely depend on the duration and intensity of the conflict. An updated global and country-level assessment is expected to be presented in the IMF’s World Economic Outlook report in April.
