IMF chief Praises Sri Lanka’s continued Economic stabilisation efforts

Visiting Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, held discussions with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in Colombo.

The meeting took place at Temple Trees. According to the Office of the Prime Minister, Georgieva commended the Government’s ongoing economic stabilisation efforts and its management of recent economic challenges and natural disasters.

The IMF Managing Director also met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat. Their discussions focused on Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, post-disaster assistance, and the next phase of the IMF-supported reform programme.

Expressing solidarity with Sri Lanka following recent natural disasters, Georgieva noted that just as the economy was showing signs of recovery, a devastating cyclone had impacted several regions. She observed that affected rural communities require renewed economic momentum and emphasised the importance of timely support for housing, land rehabilitation, and improved livelihood opportunities.

She also acknowledged the Government’s swift response in assisting affected communities and highlighted that the IMF has provided over US$ 200 million in emergency financing to support recovery efforts.
