IMEI devices must be TRCSL-registered starting today

Effective today (28th), any radio frequency (RF)-emitting devices, including those requiring IMEI registration, must be registered with the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) to operate.

TRCSL Director General Air Vice Marshal Bandula Herath stated that devices emitting electromagnetic energy, such as cell phones, wireless networks, drones, and radar, must be legally registered.

Users must provide the relevant model number to obtain proper permission under this new directive.

The registration system aims to ensure the availability of high-quality, certified electronic devices in Sri Lanka.

This decision was prompted by issues arising from the purchase of illegally imported devices, causing tax revenue losses and security concerns.

TRCSL seeks to curb illegal imports, enhance security, and streamline mobile device tracking through this initiative.

Registering an IMEI ensures compliance with regulations and allows authorities to block unauthorised or stolen devices from accessing local networks.

Non-registered IMEI-enabled RF-emitting devices will no longer function on telecommunication networks starting today.

Foreigners visiting Sri Lanka will not be affected by this requirement for their electronic devices.

Newly imported or brought devices must be registered through TRCSL’s online system, except for devices already connected to networks before today.

The IMEI, a unique 15-digit number, identifies the device’s manufacturer and marketing name and can be displayed by entering *#06# on the phone keypad.

To verify an IMEI number, users can send an SMS to 1909 in the format: IMEI [space] 15-digit number.

TRCSL plans to introduce an automated system by the end of the month to identify registered devices and take legal action against illegal traders.
