Illegal cannabis plantation discovered inside Udawalawe National Park

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with an illegal cannabis plantation discovered within Udawalawe National Park, the Department of Wildlife Conservation reported.

The plantation was uncovered yesterday during a routine patrol by wildlife officers from the Panahaduwa Site Protection Office. The cannabis plants were approximately three feet tall, and two individuals were found actively cultivating them.

Authorities also seized an illegal firearm, ammunition, a water pump used for irrigation, a solar panel powering the pump, and other related equipment.

The suspects and the confiscated items were produced before the Embilipitiya Magistrate’s Court yesterday where both pleaded guilty to all charges. One suspect was granted bail of Rs. 500,000, and the Magistrate ordered the charge sheet to be submitted on 2nd of October .
