A routine swim turned hazardous today after a large bloom of lion’s mane jellyfish drifted into Port Phillip Bay.
Sandringham Beach was swiftly closed to the public when the swarm was spotted, prompting safety concerns.
The Sandringham Life Saving Club shared footage of the jellyfish and urged the public to stay out of the water.
“Please avoid the water. Our patrollers will be on hand, but the beach will be closed,” the club said in a statement.
Stings from the jellyfish’s long tentacles are known to cause intense pain, redness and itching.
