The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) says it is continuing its investigation into a complaint alleging that former Head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay, was subjected to mistreatment while in custody.

HRCSL Commissioner Nimal G. Punchihewa said that statements from officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are being re-recorded as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The complaint was filed by relatives of Sallay, alleging that he was mistreated while being held in CID custody.

According to reports, the Commission conducted a special inspection of the detention cell where Sallay was held and identified several shortcomings, including inadequate ventilation and other basic facility issues.

The HRCSL has informed CID officials of these deficiencies and requested corrective attention where necessary.

Statements have also been recorded from other detainees held in nearby cells, as well as from CID officers involved in his custody.

The Commission further stated that additional statements from CID personnel will be obtained as part of the continuing investigation.

It also noted that it is monitoring the medical treatment being provided to Sallay, who is currently receiving care in hospital.
