HRCSL expands probe into online harassment of women leaders

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has announced plans to expand its investigations into online harassment of female politicians and political activists.

This decision follows a review by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. HRCSL highlighted Sri Lanka’s obligations under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women to prevent violence against women, including online abuse.

The Commission stressed that the government is accountable for ensuring the safety and dignity of women in the digital space.

It has urged the government to take swift action against online insults and inappropriate behavior targeting women.

The HRCSL also emphasized the importance of enforcing the Women Empowerment Act passed last year to combat such issues effectively.
