Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing criticism for failing to deliver on a March 2024 promise to build homes for the Binjari community in the Northern Territory.
Although $4 billion was allocated over ten years to support housing in Indigenous communities, only $107.7 million has been spent so far—resulting in 125 new or renovated homes across 28 sites, but none in Binjari.
The Northern Territory, home to more than 80 Indigenous communities, remains Australia’s most densely populated region in terms of Indigenous population.
Despite the NT government expressing confidence in meeting its housing targets, concerns remain over the future of funding, especially with uncertainties surrounding the federal election outcome.
Debbie Aloysi, CEO of the Binjari Indigenous Community, described the situation as dire, saying conditions have worsened and emphasizing, “I believe that housing is the first step to development.”
