Hotel owned by former governor’s wife ordered demolished

A hotel owned by Mrs. Ajantha Rupasari Herath, wife of former North Central Province Governor Maheepala Herath, has been ordered to be demolished after authorities confirmed it was illegally built within the Perimiyankulama Tank Reserve.

The order was issued by Central Nuwaragam Province Divisional Secretary Sudarshana Dissanayake, who stated that the hotel and several adjoining structures were constructed on a 60-perch plot of protected land without proper legal documentation or approval.

According to the notice, the demolition must be completed within one month.

This move is part of a broader government initiative to demarcate and safeguard tank reserves in the Anuradhapura District. Led by the Irrigation Department, the program involves surveying land and setting up boundary markers to prevent future encroachments.

Divisional Secretary Dissanayake confirmed that a recent survey established the disputed property as lying within the officially designated boundaries of the Perimiyankulama Tank Reserve, leading to the legal order for demolition.
