
Health authorities in Anuradhapura have reported a significant decline in HIV and AIDS cases in the district, with only four new cases detected in the first half of this year, compared to 21 during the same period last year.
Dr. Ajith Karavita, Chief Medical Officer of the Anuradhapura Sexual Health Services Centre, noted that 97% of the 155 reported cases since 2023 are under treatment.
Over 12,500 blood tests were conducted last year, and condom distribution has risen from 150,000 to 500,000 to support prevention efforts.
Deputy Director of Health Services Dr. Dhammika De Silva credited public awareness campaigns and regular testing for effectively controlling the spread of the disease.
