Historic first: woman elected as Olympic president

For the first time in history, a woman has been elected as the President of the International Olympic Committee.

Christy Coventry, a 41-year-old former swimming champion and the current Sports Minister of Zimbabwe, has secured this prestigious position.

With her election, she becomes the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee and the first African to hold this role.

Notably, Coventry is also the youngest person ever to be elected as the President of the IOC.

The election took place yesterday (20th) in Greece, where she won the majority of votes in the first round.

She is set to officially assume her responsibilities as President next June.
