Heavy fines warned for illegal fireworks ahead of Australia Day

Authorities have issued an urgent warning about the use of illegal fireworks ahead of the Australia Day public holiday.

SafeWork NSW Acting Deputy Secretary Trent Curtin emphasized that heavy penalties would be imposed on anyone caught using unsanctioned fireworks.

This warning follows a surge in illegal fireworks usage during New Year’s Eve, with over 180 reports of violations across the state.

Fireworks use is strictly regulated in every state and territory, requiring permits and licenses, with the exception of the Northern Territory, where fireworks can be legally used only on Territory Day in July.

In New South Wales, penalties for unauthorized fireworks activity, such as buying, selling, or igniting them, can include fines of up to $27,500 and up to 12 months in prison.

The rise in illegal fireworks during the recent festive season has raised concerns for public safety. Curtin warned that using fireworks without a license can lead to serious injuries and consequences.

Last year, a 19-year-old man tragically lost his life in Melbourne after a fireworks explosion in Kalkallo, highlighting the dangers of illegal fireworks.
