Heat index reaches caution level in parts of island

The Meteorology Department has issued a Heat Index Advisory for the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, and Southern provinces, as well as the Ratnapura district, effective tomorrow (Feb 18th).

The heat index, which represents the temperature felt on the human body, is expected to reach the ‘Caution’ level in some areas.

Under this level, prolonged exposure and physical activity may lead to fatigue, while continued exertion could cause heat cramps.

Authorities advise the public to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade, and limit strenuous outdoor activities.

People are also urged to check on the elderly and the sick, avoid leaving children unattended in vehicles, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated based on relative humidity and maximum temperature.

It reflects how hot it feels rather than the actual air temperature and is generated using global numerical weather prediction models.
