Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of illness and death, affecting around 60,000 people each year in Sri Lanka, according to Senior Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Gotabaya Ranasinghe.
The condition includes serious health issues such as heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Dr. Ranasinghe revealed that Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) alone accounts for 20% of all reported deaths.
He noted a 15% increase in heart disease cases over the past decade, with approximately 200 patients seeking treatment for heart-related issues each day.
He identified poor diet, lack of exercise, and stress as key contributing factors.
However, he emphasized that early prevention and adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of developing heart disease.
Dr. Ranasinghe also raised concern over the growing number of cases among younger individuals, calling for urgent public awareness and intervention.
