Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa is scheduled to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Tarique Rahman as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday.
The information was confirmed to Bangladesh media by Dharmapala Weerakkody, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh. The visit is viewed as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, reflecting the cordial relations between the two nations.
Meanwhile, Om Birla, Speaker of India’s Lok Sabha, and Vikram Misri, India’s Foreign Secretary, are expected to represent India at the ceremony.
Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath of office to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led cabinet at the National Parliament’s South Plaza in Dhaka. Traditionally, the ceremony is held at Bangabhaban’s Darbar Hall, but this time the Parliament premises will host the event, according to Bangladesh media reports.
The centre-right Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a landslide victory in the general election, winning more than two-thirds of parliamentary seats, 18 months after mass protests led to the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Jamaat, the country’s main Islamist party, emerged second, while Hasina’s Awami League was barred from contesting.
Tarique Rahman is expected to face significant challenges in reviving the economy and restoring democratic governance after 15 years of rule under Hasina. Voters also endorsed sweeping democratic reforms in a referendum held alongside the election.
