Health authorities issue warning amid surge in skin disease cases

Health officials have raised concerns over a sudden spike in skin-related illnesses reported across the country, according to the Health Promotion Bureau.

Dermatologist Dr. Janaka Akarawita noted that 20% of the reported cases are due to ringworm, a contagious fungal infection that presents as red, circular rashes and spreads through skin contact or shared personal items.

Dr. Akarawita highlighted that globally, 1.6 billion people suffer from skin diseases, many of which are linked to mental and social disorders.

He warned against the use of steroid creams without proper medical guidance, as they can cause side effects like skin thinning, dryness, redness, itching, and a sticky texture.

Health experts caution the public to avoid unregistered creams and products that lack proper labeling or laboratory certification.

Authorities urge individuals to seek early medical treatment, avoid self-medication, and maintain good personal hygiene to help prevent the spread of skin infections.
