
Sunil Handunnetti, Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, was elected as the President of the Sri Lanka-Republic of Korea Parliamentary Friendship Association for the Tenth Parliament on 18th of February .
The revival meeting of the Friendship Association took place in Parliament, with Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne as the patron and H.E. Miyon Lee, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, as the guest of honor.
The event was also attended by Deputy Chairperson of Committees Hemali Weerasekara, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Members of Parliament, and the Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera.
During the meeting, MP Nilanthi Kottahachchi, Attorney-at-Law, was elected as the Secretary of the association.
Speaker Dr. Wickramaratne highlighted the long-standing friendship between the two countries and emphasized that the meeting marked a renewed chapter in their relationship.
He noted Korea’s significant role as an economic partner, with trade in key exports such as apparel, Ceylon tea, cinnamon, and gemstones.
He expressed confidence that the revived association would further strengthen bilateral ties.
Ambassador Miyon Lee congratulated the newly elected officials and recognized the association’s role in fostering parliamentary ties.
She expressed her enthusiasm for collaborating with the revitalized association.
President Sunil Handunnetti, in his address, thanked everyone for the opportunity to lead the association and emphasized its commitment to enhancing mutual understanding, peace, and progress for both nations.
He expressed hope for continued support from the Ambassador to achieve the association’s goals.
Secretary Nilanthi Kottahachchi concluded the event with a vote of thanks, calling for the support of all Members for the success of future activities.
