
The owner of the Hambantota Bird Park has been arrested in connection with the illegal importation of luxury motorcycles into Sri Lanka.
Police confirmed that the suspect had been evading arrest for several days before being apprehended today ( 17th of July ) in Colombo.
He is currently being held at the Maradana Police Station and is expected to be produced before court later today.
Earlier, police seized 21 illegally imported motorcycles — including 8 high-end bikes and 4 tricycle-type vehicles — from a warehouse located within the Hambantota Bird Park premises.
The raid was carried out by the Central Crimes Investigation Bureau following a tip-off received by the Acting Inspector General of Police.
The park’s manager and warehouse supervisor were previously arrested and remanded until 25th of July in relation to the same case.
Authorities estimate the value of the seized motorcycles to exceed Rs. 200 million.
Police further revealed that the suspects were previously involved in illegal vehicle import operations.
