Habitat of endangered Bandula Barb to be declared conservation zone

The Ministry of Environment has announced plans to designate the habitat of the endangered Bandula Barb (Pethia bandula) as a conservation zone.

The Bandula Barb is a rare freshwater fish species found only in Sri Lanka, specifically in the Galapitamada area of the Warakapola Divisional Secretariat.

The decision to protect the species’ habitat was made in line with National Environment Week, which culminates on June 5 with World Environment Day.

June 2, observed as Biodiversity Conservation Day, will feature several initiatives aimed at raising awareness about endangered species and ecological preservation.

A special event will be held on June 2 in Galapitamada under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody to officially mark the conservation effort.

The program is organized by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in collaboration with local authorities.

Residents in the area will be engaged through awareness campaigns highlighting the importance of protecting the Bandula Barb and its fragile ecosystem.

As part of the event, a tree-planting drive will be conducted near local reservoirs where the species is found, helping to restore and protect their habitat.

Officials emphasize that community involvement is essential in preserving this critically endangered fish, which is unique to Sri Lanka.

The move marks a significant step in Sri Lanka’s broader biodiversity conservation efforts and reflects the country’s commitment to protecting endemic species.
