Gun license policy: one firearm per person for personal protection

The Ministry of Defence announced through electronic and print media that all firearms and ammunition issued to civilians for personal protection must be returned to the government by 21st of November 2024, for a quantitative review.

As of now, approximately 85% of licensees have complied and returned their firearms. Licensees who wish to retain their firearms were instructed to submit appeals to the Ministry of Defence before 30th of October 2024, detailing their requirements. Appeals must be accompanied by relevant documents and the firearms for inspection and review.

The Ministry has decided to allow only one firearm per person for personal protection, subject to approval based on intelligence reports. All appeals and inspections are expected to be completed by 20th 0f January 2025, and licensees must submit their firearms for review before this deadline.

The Ministry has also noted a significant issuance of firearms and ammunition by the Sri Lanka Army and Police in the past. These must be returned to the government by 31st of December 2024, as instructed. Licensees are directed to hand over their firearms and ammunition to the nearest police station.

Failure to comply with these directives or to submit firearms for inspection by the stipulated dates will result in legal action under the Firearm Ordinance No. 33 of 1916.

The Ministry emphasizes that these measures are part of a broader effort to ensure public safety by minimizing firearm misuse and strengthening regulation. Licensees must return all unsubmitted firearms by 20th of January 2025 or face legal consequences.
