The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has announced that mineral transportation activities will be suspended on school days during two time periods: from 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
GSMB Director General Dipani Weerakoon said the decision was made following discussions after a recent accident in which a school van collided with a sand tipper truck.
She explained that vehicles involved in mineral transportation during these hours must be parked in suitable locations away from main roads.
Weerakoon added that, effective September 4, instructions have been issued to all Divisional Secretariats across the country to implement the measure.
