A group of former Members of Parliament has submitted a letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake titled “Let Us Ensure the Rule of Law”, calling for fair and lawful treatment of former State Intelligence Service chief Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay.
The letter comes amid growing public discussion surrounding the alleged mistreatment of Sallay, who is currently being held in police custody.
The signatories stressed that incidents associated with Sri Lanka’s violent past, including the killing of individuals while in custody, should never be repeated in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.
They referred to historical allegations surrounding the death of Rohana Wijeweera while in custody, stating that such events must not be allowed to recur.
The former MPs urged the President to carefully review all relevant facts and ensure that the former intelligence chief is treated as an ordinary suspect under the law, in keeping with the principle of equality before the law.
They emphasized that legal processes should be conducted fairly, impartially, and in accordance with democratic values and established judicial procedures.
The letter was signed by former MPs Dullas Alahapperuma, Dilan Perera, D.B. Herath, Dr. Gunapala Rathnasekera, Karu Kodithuwakku, Dr. Thilak Rajapaksha, Dr. Upul Galappaththi, Lalith Ellawala, and K.P.S. Kumarasiri.
