Govt to set up medicine testing labs: health secretary

Health Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe announced the government’s plans to establish new laboratories in Sri Lanka to enhance medicine quality testing.

He emphasized that medicine testing should occur at various quality-check stages, rather than only in response to complaints, as has been the practice so far.

Dr. Jasinghe revealed plans to investigate allegations regarding the importation of medicines by a blacklisted company.

Speaking in Kandy, he highlighted the importance of ensuring medicine quality in a country like Sri Lanka, where the healthcare system is state-run, and procurement is centralized.

The proposed testing labs aim to strengthen the country’s capacity to ensure safe and effective medicines for public healthcare.

Dr. Jasinghe also noted that Sri Lanka’s procurement process is more extensive than that of many developed nations, due to its centralized supply system.
