Govt to review quality standards of education degrees from private universities

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya announced that the Ministry of Education has initiated a formal review into the quality of educationist degrees offered by private universities and affiliated higher education institutions in Sri Lanka.

She noted that concerns have been raised regarding the qualifications of graduates from these institutions, particularly their eligibility for recruitment into the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service.

Speaking at a meeting with teacher and principal union representatives on June 14 at the Ministry premises in Isurupaya, Dr. Amarasuriya explained that recent teacher appointments were made in accordance with existing teacher service regulations approved by the previous government.

However, she stressed that the Ministry is now re-evaluating the credibility and academic standards of educationist degrees, even those issued by government-approved private universities.

She added that future teacher recruitment will be based on the findings of this ongoing quality review.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Labour Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe, Acting Education Ministry Secretary Amal Edirisuriya, and other senior officials.
