The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court yesterday that the Government has decided to review the Protection of Occupants Bill currently before Parliament. The announcement was made when petitions challenging the constitutionality of the proposed legislation were taken up for consideration.
Appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmavardhana told the Court that the Government had opted to reconsider the Bill. She further stated that the Justice Minister has granted a one-month period, beginning 3rd of February, to invite public views and proposals on the legislation.
In light of the Government’s decision to revisit the Bill, the Supreme Court decided to conclude the hearings of the petitions filed in relation to the matter.
