Govt. to celebrate 77th Independence Day with minimal costs

The government has decided to celebrate the 77th National Independence Day at Independence Square in Colombo, keeping costs to a minimum.

Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Dr. A.H.M.H. Abayarathna, emphasized that the event should still reflect the nation’s pride and dignity despite the financial constraints.

He acknowledged the country’s economic challenges and stressed the importance of holding the celebrations at a minimal cost.

During the first organizing committee meeting for the event, held on 31st of December at the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Minister pointed out that last year’s celebrations cost Rs. 107 million, and this year’s event should aim to reduce expenses significantly.

Additionally, Dr. Abayarathna suggested that the public should be given the opportunity to witness the celebrations.

The government is working towards making the event meaningful without placing a heavy financial burden on the country.
