The government has called on District Secretaries to present new ideas and proposals to strengthen the Prajashakthi initiative as a comprehensive national programme.
Secretary to the President, Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, made the request during a district-level review meeting held yesterday at the Presidential Secretariat, with the participation of District Secretaries. He highlighted the crucial role District Secretaries play in ensuring the success of the initiative.
The Prajashakthi programme, implemented as a key government initiative, aims to strengthen communities and ensure fair distribution of economic benefits. Officials stressed that it should not be treated as just another poverty-alleviation scheme, but rather advanced as part of the national vision to build a prosperous country, with the full involvement of state institutions.
It was also agreed that all district-level development projects should stem from village-level development committees, ensuring that funds are allocated based on actual needs instead of budgetary limits. The programme will also allow private sector participation to support rural development.
The meeting further reviewed progress on other key initiatives, including the Clean Sri Lanka programme, Mid-Year Budget Programme, District Development Projects, Rural Roads Development, Estate Community Infrastructure Development, Disaster-Resilient Housing in plantation areas, and measures to reduce human-elephant conflict.
Discussions also focused on improving healthcare, education, facilities for schools and sports schools, and targeted efforts to reduce poverty by 2030. Attention was given to decentralising the functions of the President’s Fund to better serve communities.
The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including ministry secretaries, senior advisers to the President, and directors from key departments.
