The Minister of Housing Construction and Water Supply, Susil Ranasinghe, announced that plans are underway to construct 31,000 houses in 2026 under the national housing programme.

He said the 2026 National Housing Programme, titled “A Place to Belong – A Beautiful Life,” will commence tomorrow (25) and will be implemented across 13 districts.
The Minister noted that nearly 25,000 of the planned houses will be built under direct assistance schemes. Through the National Housing Development Authority, housing assistance will be provided to about 10,000 families with a total allocation of Rs. 10 billion.
Each selected family will receive a non-repayable grant of Rs. 1 million to build their own house, he said.
The programme will officially begin with the distribution of Rs. 1.5 billion in cheques to 1,500 families across 13 districts to support the construction of 1,500 houses, the Minister added.
