Govt plans modest 77th Independence Day celebrations

The Ministry of Public Administration has announced that the 77th Independence Day celebrations will be scaled down with reduced costs, fewer guests, and limited activities.

Minister Professor Chandana Abeyratne stated that the guest list will be cut from 3,000 to 1,600 attendees.

The traditional 21-gun salute presented by the President will not take place this year.

The number of military and police personnel participating in the tri-forces and police parade will be reduced.

Armed vehicles will not be displayed during the military parade as part of the celebrations.

Air displays will also be limited to minimize expenses for this year’s Independence Day event.
