Govt. introduces disaster relief cargo clearance procedure for overseas donors

The Government of Sri Lanka has introduced a simplified cargo-clearance process for essential goods donated by overseas donors to support flood-affected communities, with all import taxes and levies fully exempted.

This system has been formulated in response to numerous requests and inquiries from foreign organisations, international donors, and Sri Lankans living abroad who wish to contribute humanitarian assistance.

Under the new procedure, donated aid can now be cleared and distributed more efficiently, ensuring that essential supplies reach affected communities without delay.

Guidelines for making donations are available on the Sri Lanka Customs website, while detailed information on the types of essential goods and materials that can be donated can be accessed through the official donation portal.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet has approved the creation of the ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Fund, aimed at restoring the country following the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

The fund will be established as a statutory body under the Presidential Secretariat and will be managed by a committee comprising representatives from both the government and private sector.

Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, has been appointed as Chairman of the Fund, while Senior Additional Secretary to the President, G.M.R.D. Aponso, will serve as the Committee’s Convener.
