Govt. Committed to enhancing healthcare services and professional standards – PM

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya affirmed the government’s commitment to improving healthcare facilities and raising professional standards across the sector. She emphasized the importance of compassionate service, particularly from nurses and midwives.

She made these remarks at a ceremony held on 24th of May at Temple Trees, where appointment letters were presented to 3,147 newly recruited nurses—the largest intake in Sri Lanka’s history.

“Nursing is not merely a job, but a humanitarian service,” the Prime Minister said, highlighting the physical and emotional sacrifices nurses make in caring for patients. She acknowledged the impact their work has on both their personal lives and families.

Dr. Amarasuriya reiterated the government’s vision of “A Prosperous Country, a Beautiful Life,” stressing that public wellbeing begins with good health. To this end, she pledged support for better salaries, promotions, training, and safer working conditions, especially considering the predominantly female nursing workforce and their added social responsibilities.

Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa also addressed the gathering, noting that this was the largest public sector recruitment since the new government took office. He called on the entire public service to work with compassion and dedication to support the country’s path toward recovery and development.

Senior health officials, including Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe, were also present at the event.
