Government undecided on defence chief’s future

The government has yet to decide whether to retain or abolish the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) position after the conclusion of General Shavendra Silva’s tenure.

Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that no decision has been made regarding the continuation or abolition of the CDS role.

General Silva’s term is set to end on December 31, 2024. He was initially appointed as CDS on June 1, 2022, and later re-appointed by then-President Ranil Wickremesinghe on June 1, 2024, for his current term.

The government is still deliberating on the future of the CDS position as General Silva’s tenure nears its conclusion.
