Government to urgently import antigen test kits

The Ministry of Health is preparing to import additional COVID-19 antigen test kits as a precautionary measure amid concerns about a new global variant, according to media.

Although current supplies are sufficient for now, the Ministry is taking this step to ensure readiness in case of a sudden rise in cases.

Health Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe said hospitals with testing capabilities are on high alert and have been instructed to enhance surveillance of patients with fever or flu-like symptoms, particularly in high-risk areas.

The Ministry aims to prioritize early detection and rapid response, while medical experts urge the public to remain calm. One official noted that COVID-19 is now managed like other seasonal respiratory illnesses, with no cause for panic but a need for continued vigilance.

Dr. Jasinghe also dismissed the possibility of immediate travel or social restrictions, stating that the situation is being closely monitored with existing healthcare protocols.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jasinghe has directed Western Province’s Deputy Chief Secretary B.N. Damminda Kumara to reconsider a circular advising all government institution employees to wear face masks as a precaution against influenza and COVID-19, stating such a directive is unnecessary at this time.

Despite this, a surge in demand for face masks has been reported across Colombo and other cities, leading to shortages in pharmacies and medical supply stores following news of the new variant.
