Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Ruwan Senarath has announced that 2,000 cab vehicles will be imported early next year for the use of heads of government institutions.
Explaining the decision, the Deputy Minister said that providing reliable transport is vital for local government heads to access rural areas and effectively implement grassroots-level development projects.
He noted that several new initiatives have already been launched by reactivating previously inactive local government bodies, while other programmes are being introduced to eliminate rural poverty.
“We need to create opportunities for officials to travel back and forth. That means we need vehicles, machinery, and tools,” Minister Senarath said. “Therefore, under the new government, we will be importing 2,000 cab vehicles in the first quarter of next year to support the heads of institutions across the country. This will make it easier for officers to travel and carry out fieldwork.”
The Deputy Minister further stated that local government institutions also require machinery such as backhoe loaders for village-level projects. Funds have already been allocated for this purpose, and additional equipment is expected to be brought in this year.
“By next year, our goal is to provide every local government institution with the essential tools they need. This will accelerate development efforts nationwide and ensure that projects are successfully implemented at the grassroots level,” he added.
