The government has decided to establish a special operations committee comprising officials from both the public and private sectors to take swift measures aimed at promoting sports tourism in Sri Lanka.
Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath issued the directive during a special meeting held yesterday at the Ministry of Tourism, which was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sri Lanka Cricket, and several sports federations.
The discussion focused on attracting more international visitors by hosting and promoting national and international sports events in Sri Lanka, including cricket, rugby, and football tournaments. The committee also identified opportunities to engage the growing number of athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators who already visit Sri Lanka annually for various sporting events.
Officials highlighted Sri Lanka’s increasing appeal for adventure and outdoor activities such as white-water rafting, surfing, mountaineering, cycling, and marathons, which are held across different regions of the country.
According to the review, approximately 40 cricket matches are scheduled for the first four months of next year, along with many other sporting events. However, participants noted that sports events are not yet fully utilized to attract tourists.
To address this, the newly formed operations committee will focus on linking sporting events with tourism promotion efforts.
Minister Herath emphasized that the government recognizes sports tourism as a key sector within Sri Lanka’s broader tourism development strategy. He added that the committee will help identify the unique strengths and potential of the industry to guide future initiatives.
The committee will also explore strategies to connect the sports and tourism sectors, enhance international promotion, improve infrastructure, and provide policy guidance and planning to position Sri Lanka as a leading sports tourism destination in the region.
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe and Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage.
