
The Food Policy and Security Committee, chaired by Minister K.D. Lal Kantha and Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe, held its first meeting on 22nd of January at the Presidential Secretariat to discuss food security policy decisions.
The committee’s primary goal is to implement the government’s policy of ensuring a safe, secure, and sustainable food system for all citizens.
During the meeting, the importance of reliable data and information for making informed decisions on food security was emphasized, with a robust data system being identified as a key priority.
Minister Lal Kantha stressed the need to provide rice not only for direct consumption but also for industries such as poultry, egg production, and beer manufacturing, which depend on it.
Minister also highlighted the need to study the country’s food consumption patterns to improve public health and reduce food waste.
Key discussions included establishing a national food security policy framework, creating a food information system, and developing strategies to increase local production based on scientific evidence.
