Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa said today that the government is “digging its own pit,” adding that it is the responsibility of the opposition to pressure the administration to at least partially fulfil the promises it made to the people.
Addressing the media at an event in Seenigama, MP Rajapaksa said the SLPP had carried out various political and promotional activities over the past year, noting that the period had been especially difficult for the public.
He said people were severely affected by what he described as unbearable taxes imposed after the National People’s Power (NPP) government came to power, as well as by a series of natural disasters. According to him, the government failed to act promptly in several instances where lives could have been saved and has also failed to deliver on its key pledges.
“Many people were forced to welcome the New Year while staying in safety centres and temporary camps, uncertain about their lives and their homes,” MP Rajapaksa said, recalling that the President had promised compensation for those affected by disasters.
He stressed that the government must prioritise the payment of compensation and take immediate steps to resettle displaced families in their homes. “The government does not pay attention to the actions taken by opposition parties, but it must fulfil the promises made to the people,” he said.
“As the SLPP, we will continue to fulfil our responsibilities,” MP Rajapaksa added.
