Government approves national cyber protection operations center

The government has approved the establishment of a National Cyber Protection Operations Center under the guidance of the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) and the Ministry of Digital Economy, aimed at addressing rising cyber threats and risks.

Cabinet Spokesman and Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, speaking to the media today, warned that cyberattacks targeting public institutions and financial organizations could disrupt essential services. He emphasized that such incidents may lead to the leakage of sensitive data, threatening personal security, national security, economic stability, public health, good governance, and public trust in state institutions.

The new center will operate 24/7, continuously monitoring, detecting, and responding to cyber threats. It will also offer facilities to identify and report malicious software and unauthorized access attempts.

The Cabinet approved a proposal by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his role as Minister of Digital Economy, directing secretaries and heads of relevant ministries to utilize the services of the National Cyber Protection Operations Center on an ongoing basis.
