The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has raised concerns over serious issues arising from the mishandling of doctor transfers by the Medical Services Unit of the Ministry of Health.
GMOA spokesperson Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe stated that the annual transfer process for medical officers across various grades has become severely disrupted, causing complications within the healthcare system.
He emphasized that despite having clearly outlined institutional guidelines, the Medical Services Unit has acted unilaterally, disregarding proper procedures.
As a result, the transfer process for approximately 23,000 doctors has been affected, with over 10,000 of them still awaiting implementation of their transfers.
Dr. Wijesinghe further revealed that nearly 50% of Sri Lankan doctors are currently not stationed at the hospitals to which they were officially assigned.
The GMOA urged immediate corrective action to restore proper transfer procedures and prevent further disruption in the country’s healthcare services.
