GMOA criticizes duty allowance cut in budget

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has raised concerns over salary revisions in Budget 2025, despite supporting the government’s efforts to strengthen Sri Lanka’s free health service.

In a statement, the GMOA acknowledged the record Rs. 604 billion allocation for the health sector and Rs. 185 billion for medical supplies. It also welcomed initiatives such as digitizing the drug procurement process and expanding primary healthcare services.

However, the GMOA strongly criticized the reduction in doctors’ extra duty allowance. While basic salaries have increased, the hourly rate for extra duty allowance has been cut by 50%, and holiday allowances have been reduced, leading to financial losses for medical professionals.

The association warned that these cuts could demoralize doctors, worsen the ongoing brain drain, and ultimately impact patient care. It has requested an urgent meeting with the President and Health Minister to discuss their concerns, cautioning that unresolved issues could lead to trade union action.
