Galle Fort’s historic entrance closed temporarily

The Southern Province regional office of the Archaeology Department has announced the temporary closure of the old entrance to Galle Fort 28th to 31st of December.

The closure is necessary to facilitate a conservation project on the fort wall surrounding the ancient gate of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Southern Provincial Archaeology Director Wasanthi Alahakoon stated that the decision was made to carry out chemical conservation work near the historic gates.

During this period, visitors and residents will need to use the new fort entrance for entry and exit. The department has urged the public to cooperate as the work is essential to preserve the site’s historical and cultural significance.
