Fresh evidence emerges of giant gas planet near earth’s cosmic neighbourhood

Scientists have discovered strong evidence of a giant gas planet in Alpha Centauri, the star system closest to our own, just 4.5 light years away. Although lifeless itself, the planet could have moons capable of supporting life.

The signs were detected using the powerful James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The planet, similar to Saturn or Jupiter and shrouded in thick gas clouds, was first spotted in August 2024 but vanished in follow-up observations, possibly because it moved behind its star or too close to be visible. Astronomers now plan to conduct further observations to confirm its existence.

Researchers are particularly interested because the planet orbits a Sun-like star, similar in temperature and brightness to our own. “Four years is a long way but in galaxy terms, it’s very close – it’s in our neighbourhood,” said Dr. Carly Howett of the University of Oxford.

Gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn cannot support life themselves, but their icy moons may be habitable. Similar missions in our solar system, such as Europa Clipper and Juice, are already investigating this possibility. If this new planet has moons, they would be much closer to their star than Jupiter’s moons are to the Sun, making them potentially more hospitable.

Direct imaging of such distant worlds is extremely challenging due to the overwhelming glare from their stars. Charles Beichman from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory explained that the brightness and movement of Alpha Centauri’s stars make detection difficult, requiring “an element of luck.”

Future investigations will use not only JWST but also NASA’s upcoming Grace Roman Space Telescope, set to launch in 2027. Spectral imaging could reveal the planet’s composition and offer clues about whether any of its moons could support life.
