The Free Lawyers organisation has alleged that the Central Bank has continued printing money during 2025 and 2026, contributing to the current foreign exchange issues facing the country.

Chief Executive Officer of Free Lawyers, Keerthi Tennekoon, claimed that the Central Bank printed Rs. 1,653 billion in 2025 and a further Rs. 610.7 billion between January and March this year.
According to the allegations, the country’s total money supply had expanded to Rs. 16,585.7 billion by March 2026.
Tennekoon also alleged that the Central Bank Governor had instructed commercial banks to maintain the rupee within a range of Rs. 329 to Rs. 335 against the US dollar.
He further claimed that the Central Bank had used rupee reserves to purchase dollars from commercial banks in an effort to manage the exchange rate.
The Free Lawyers organisation also pointed to rising interest rates, which increased to 8.75 percent, and claimed that outstanding state debt had risen to nearly Rs. 30 trillion in 2025 compared to November 2024 levels.
Tennekoon additionally alleged that the vehicle market was facing instability and criticised recent fuel price increases, calling on the Central Bank to respond comprehensively to the claims instead of issuing brief media statements.
