Four Sri Lankans arrested at BIA over attempted medicine smuggling worth Rs. 10 million

Four individuals, including a woman, have been arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport for attempting to smuggle a stock of medicines worth approximately Rs. 10 million into Sri Lanka.

According to reports, the suspects were apprehended by Customs officials this morning (07) while trying to leave the airport through the ‘Green Channel’, which is designated for passengers with nothing to declare.

The suspects, all residents of Colombo, had reportedly arrived from Bangalore.

Customs officers discovered a large quantity of medicines—including injections, tablets, capsules, and ointments—hidden inside eight suitcases carried by the group.

Further investigations revealed that the medicines had not been declared and were brought into the country without obtaining the necessary approvals from the Ministry of Health and the National Medicines Regulatory Authority.

Customs officials at the airport are continuing investigations into the incident.
