Four monks, including Venerable Balangoda Kassapa Thera, along with five others, have been remanded in connection with an incident involving a Buddha statue in the Trincomalee area.
The incident dates back to November 16 last year, when unrest broke out following attempts to remove a Buddha statue placed at a temple in Trincomalee. The Coast Conservation Department subsequently lodged a complaint with the police, stating that the construction was unauthorised. When officials attempted to remove the statue, monks and local residents strongly opposed the move.
In connection with the case heard at the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court, the accused were summoned, and the court ordered that they be remanded until January 19.
The remand order was issued on charges of violating coastal conservation laws related to the placement of the Buddha statue at the Trincomalee Bodhiraja Vihara.
