Four arrested at BIA for smuggling whiskey and cardamom worth Rs. 15 Million

Four Sri Lankan passengers were arrested by Customs officers at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) early this morning for attempting to smuggle in a large quantity of whiskey and cardamom.

The contraband, valued at approximately Rs. 15 million, was discovered during routine baggage inspections.

The suspects, who are residents of Colombo and Hatton, arrived in Sri Lanka on IndiGo flight 6E-1183 from Bangalore, which landed at 1:00 a.m.

Customs officials found 378 bottles of whiskey and 132 kilograms of cardamom hidden in 20 pieces of luggage.

The smuggled goods were reportedly purchased from a duty-free shopping complex at a foreign airport.

The four individuals have been taken into custody, and the Airport Customs Division has launched further investigations into the incident.
