Former Defense Minister and Liberal Party stalwart Kevin Andrews dies aged 69.
Andrews died on Friday along with his wife Margie, his family announced in a statement shared on social media by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
He has been suffering from cancer for the past year.
Although broken by his death after a year-long battle with cancer, we are extremely proud of his service to our country, our local community and his party.
Before becoming a barrister, he worked as an assistant to Sir James Gobbo of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Six years later he entered politics and won a by-election in 1991 which he held for the next 31 years.
He became famous as a backbencher in 1996 when he introduced the Andrews Bill, which restricted the Act and the Northern Territory’s right to legislate on euthanasia.
The legislation remained in place for the next 25 years before being repealed in 2023
